Alleppey
The Venice of the East, where life moves at the pace of water.
Alleppey, or Alappuzha to those who live here, is the gateway to Kerala's backwaters: a lattice of canals, lagoons and lakes threaded through palm-fringed villages.
Slow is the point. A heritage houseboat (kettuvallam) carries you past paddy fields that sit below the waterline, past toddy tappers and coir weavers and children waving from the bank. Mornings open over Vembanad Lake; evenings close with a meal cooked aboard from the day's catch. This is the Kerala the brochures crop out. You join its pace rather than watch it go by.
Highlights
- ·Overnight heritage houseboat on Vembanad Lake
- ·Island village walks and coir-making villages
- ·Sunrise canoe through the narrow canals
- ·Toddy-shop lunch with a local family
