Destination
Kumarakom
A bird sanctuary and backwater calm on Vembanad's eastern shore.
Across the lake from Alleppey, Kumarakom is quieter, greener, and built around a bird sanctuary that draws migratory flocks from as far as the Himalayas and Siberia.
Mornings here belong to the birds. Egrets, herons, the flash of a kingfisher, all best met from a slow country canoe before the heat rises. The cluster of small islands on Vembanad Lake makes Kumarakom the backwaters at their most restful: fewer boats, longer horizons, and a culinary tradition built on karimeen (pearl spot) pulled straight from the water.
